About Belize
Belize, formerly known as British Honduras by European colonizers, derived its current name from the Mayan word Belix meaning “muddy-watered” referring to the major waterways: the Sittee, Sibun & Belize Rivers. Recently it was proposed to come from the phrase bel itza meaning “the road to Itza”. A small, relatively unknown Central American country, it is located on the eastern coast of the Caribbean Sea and shares borders with Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south. Belize covers an area of approximately 22,970 square kilometers (8,867 square miles) and consists of diverse ecosystems, including dense rainforests, coastal mangrove swamps, pristine beaches, and a handful of islands. Although primarily surrounded by Spanish speaking countries, the official language of Belize is English which is widely spoken. However other languages spoken are Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and various Mayan languages.
The country is divided into six districts: Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo. Belmopan, the capital, is located about 50 miles west from Belize City. Belize enjoys a sub-tropical climate with an average temperature of 80 degrees F. The rainfall ranges from 50 inches in the North to 180 inches in some areas of the South. Belize has an estimated population of around 400,000 people. The population is ethnically diverse, a melting pot of culture if you will! With various groups including Creole, Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, and others. It has a rich cultural heritage influenced by its indigenous roots, African heritage, and European and Mayan civilizations. The Garifuna and Maya cultures are particularly prominent, and their traditions, music, and cuisine contribute to Belize's vibrant cultural scene!
Government Of Belize
Belize is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as the ceremonial head of state. Belize gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. Belize's constitution provides for a three-way balance of power among the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch. The Executive Branch is composed of the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet.
The House of Representatives is comprised of 28 members who are elected by popular vote. The Senate is appointed by the Governor General, the opposition party and the Belize Advisory Council. The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor General and is the leader of the political party that commands the majority of members in the House of Representatives. Cabinet members are appointed by the Prime Minister from members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Effective power in Belize rests with the Prime Minister, who is both the leader of the ruling party and the Cabinet.
